collaboration with INTERPRT, 2021

This project emerged from a collaboration between INTERPRT, a collective of researchers, architects, and spatial designers focused on environmental justice, and the investigative newsroom Disclose. Our shared goal was unprecedented yet essential: to reveal the missing history of France’s nuclear weapons testing in Polynesia.

This groundbreaking investigation delves into previously classified archives from the French defense ministry—approximately 2,000 documents, declassified only in 2013 after a protracted legal battle. Until now, these records had never been systematically analyzed. We organized, categorised, and structured them into a searchable database, making them accessible to test survivors, researchers, and the broader public. Our inquiry also involved over 50 interviews with key witnesses, including 18 Polynesian atoll residents, 16 former military personnel, as well as judges, scientists, and civil society organizations in both French Polynesia and mainland France.
