NADOR MELILLA

2024
collaboration with Border Forensics

Nador Melilla project is an in-depth investigative analysis carried out in collaboration with Border Forensics, examining the tragic events at the Nador-Melilla border on June 24, 2022. Approximately 2,000 migrants attempted to cross the fence separating Nador, Morocco, from the Spanish enclave of Melilla. The year-long counter-investigation, conducted alongside Irídia-Center for the Defense of Human Rights and AMDH, reconstructs the sequence of events, identifies responsible parties, and addresses structural factors contributing to the tragedy. It reveals that the deaths resulted from deliberate actions by law enforcement, who directed migrants towards the border post, trapping them in conditions that facilitated severe violence. The report underscores the broader context of anti-Black violence, European migration control policies, and impunity at borders, calling for accountability from Moroccan and Spanish authorities as well as the European Union to meet the victims’ and families’ demands for truth and justice.
